Description

A French Quarter Icon: The Original Muffuletta

Step into a world where the savory scent of cured pork and aged cheeses fills the air, and shelves overflow with imported Italian delicacies. This is Central Grocery, where Salvatore Lupo created the world’s first muffuletta in 1906.

They still do things the old-fashioned way for three generations. Each sandwich is a masterclass in texture and flavor, featuring generous layers of fresh-sliced meats stacked on locally baked, handmade bread. It’s finished with the essential component: Lupo family's proprietary Italian Olive Salad.

Taste the tradition that made Central Grocery famous.

Unit Size: 32oz

Ingredients:  Olives with Pimentos, Oil Blend (Soybean/Extra Virgin Olive Oil), Cauliflower, Carrots, Celery, Kalamata Olives, Red Bell Peppers, Capers, Pepperoncini, Water, Vinegar, Salt, Spices, Garlic and Calcium Chloride, Potassium Sorbate, Lactic Acid, Sodium Bisulfite and Yellow No. 5 as preservatives.

I decided to try making my own veggie muffaletta using veggie ham substitute, cheese, ciabatta bread, and Central Grocery Olive Salad

Posted by Will on Nov 28th 2018

I decided to try making my own veggie muffaletta using veggie ham substitute, cheese, ciabatta bread, and Central Grocery Olive Salad. I'm very happy with the flavor of this olive salad and the general outcome of the muffaletta. My one small complaint is that the salad contains some whole olives, and they don't work very well as a sandwich spread. With that said, chopping up the few whole olives that I spoon out into smaller bits is easy enough to do.

This was our first time making muffaletta's since having them on our NO's trip! This salad packs a punch of flavor, but fell a little short on the consistency. I had to really chop the mix up, the pieces are quite large and do not spread easily. A few pulses in my processor and I have a perfect salad spread!

This turns a ordinary sandwich into a NOLA favorite

This turns a ordinary sandwich into a NOLA favorite. This is the best olive salad and it is so good on Italian sub sandwiches.

The Original is still the best

The Original is still the best . Either build a Muffaletta or add a topping your italian sub, or just eat it out the jar when no one is looking!

Took a chance ordering this to make Mufaletta (is there really any way to properly spell this?) sandwiches for the first time at a gathering for groom

Took a chance ordering this to make Mufaletta (is there really any way to properly spell this?) sandwiches for the first time at a gathering for groomsmen before the wedding. As in all things, the end result is only as good each ingredient. This choice was a solid VERY GOOD choice. It has only very sparse pieces of Kalamata Olives and a piece here and there of other veggies like cauliflower. The good -- taste was DELISH (even for people that did not love olives), and the sandwich was DELISH. Not so great -- we purchased and added quite a bulk amount of Kalamata Olives, and for use as a sandwich spread/layer, we needed to dice it up much smaller than it came in the jar (or it would have made the pieces fall apart). Def would buy again, but "some assembly required."

    It's chock full of yumminess

It's chock full of yumminess. Our favorite way to prepare it is to make a red sauce, make meatballs and serve with a meatball and olive salad. Add a bit of toasty Italian or French bread and Yum Yum...or serve over pasta.

When we lived in New Orleans we frequently ate muffaletas from Central Grocery

When we lived in New Orleans we frequently ate muffaletas from Central Grocery. This product is good but the olives aren't all cut up and the olive oil taste is not as strong as I would like. We use it for sandwiches and to mix into green salads.

This took me right back to my first muffaletta from Central Grocery in the Quarter. No other olive salad compares.
