Description

Central Grocery is the Home of the Original Muffuletta. Located on Decatur Street in the middle of New Orleans’ French Quarter, they are a third generation, old-fashioned grocery store founded in 1906 by Salvatore Lupo, a Sicilian immigrant who is famous for creating the muffuletta. Lined with shelves stocked with imported pasta and olive oil as the aroma of cured pork and aged cheeses fill the air, the shop hasn’t changed over the years. They always make their muffulettas with meats sliced in house, locally baked handmade bread and THIS the family’s Italian Olive Salad. Enjoy your own taste of New Orleans!

Unit Size: 32oz

Ingredients:  Olives with Pimentos, Oil Blend (Soybean/Extra Virgin Olive Oil), Cauliflower, Carrots, Celery, Kalamata Olives, Red Bell Peppers, Capers, Pepperoncini, Water, Vinegar, Salt, Spices, Garlic and Calcium Chloride, Potassium Sorbate, Lactic Acid, Sodium Bisulfite and Yellow No. 5 as preservatives.

I used this for Muffaletta Sandwiches. It is the original, the one and the only! Full of gigantic olives and chunks of veggies marinated in premium olive oil! Accept no substitute!

I found a recipe online that was for muffalatas and I had not had them yet

I found a recipe online that was for muffalatas and I had not had them yet. I wanted them for my birthday and my daughter was going to make them. This recipe was authentic and was very important to the flavor she said to get only New Orleans style Olive salad, so I searched, found this jar, ordered it, gave it to my daughter to use with the rest of the ingredients and BAM! Everyone was not even talking during the eating of these sammies. This salad packed the amazing punch of salty brine olives with the other veg all marinated to make your mouth water and need to buy more! Very worth the price and highly recommend!

    I live in Louisiana

Posted by Nick Savarino on May 23rd 2019

I live in Louisiana. This Central Grocery olive salad is the gold standard by which all others are judged. Central Grocery invented the muffuletta sandwich. The salad is not fine chopped. The flavor is outstanding. As stated on the jar.....often imitated...never duplicated. Another great muffuletta salad that was made in New Orleans is from Progress Grocery which was a couple doors down from Central Grocery. Progress Grocery is closed but their olive salad is still available online and in some stores in Louisiana. Progress salad is more finely chopped and also very good. Personally, even though Central Grocery olive salad is the gold standard, I prefer Progress Grocery brand. Both are outstanding and the ......real deal. Some others are good but are imitators. If you can’t find muffuletta bread you can use a good crusty French bread. Look up the ingredients for the proper meats and cheeses for a muffuletta.

This is delicious, but because it has to be shipped from New Orleans, it is a little pricey

This is delicious, but because it has to be shipped from New Orleans, it is a little pricey. But I really liked it.
